Growing up in a family of musicians performing extensively throughout the Midwest they were similar traditional jazz singers of the 1940s, the Hi-Los, presenting musical clinics, special events and performing on television and radio. The study of piano, saxophone and flute from a very early age demonstrated her commitment to music. Marcia received numerous awards from classical music competitions and experienced a variety of styles including gospel, folk, as well as jazz. This is the impetus behind her music, its cross-genre, cross-cultural influences and ethnic origins.

Receiving her Bachelor of Music from Drake University (in Flute and Piano Performance) started a tour of America that began as an Artist-in-Residence for the National Endowment of the Art’s ‘Jazz Artist in Schools’ Program. Music performances, clinics and interdisciplinary pedagogy were utilized to teach basic skills such as Math, English, Science, Art, Creative Writing and Physical Education. The residencies ranged from the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Montana to dance/jazz clinics in New Orleans and Phoenix to teacher trainings at Duke University and extended residencies at the University of Montana in Bozeman, Missoula and University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Serving as an Artist/Composer in Residence at San Pedro Elementary School from 1991-1997 with its diverse population of students, Marcia researched ethnic songs and dances from a variety of regions, composing and rearranging the songs for the students. During this residency, her practice was to invite artists from other disciplines, poets, dancers, mimes, musicians and actors, bringing the “live” component of music/arts into the classroom and train teachers to use the arts in basic skills education. Another modality she used incorporated elders of the community to ‘team-teach’ on a variety of subjects.

She has also written and received several grants to use music/arts for therapy at hospitals, retirement centers and residential care units for recipients of all ages. In 1994 at the Bay Area Music Awards with her Bay Area students she performed an original work, The Children, and directed the children’s choir for a nationally distributed educational video entitled YOU CAN!.

As Master Teacher and Director of Curriculum at Miracle Music School, a private educational institution, Marcia developed curriculum that included parental involvement in child’s musical education development. Her intent was, and still is, ‘to instill a love and joy for music in a family setting’ through a variety of activities that included percussion skills, piano performance, vocal training, music theory, ear training, improvisation and composition. Many of these activities began as games she conceptualized, designed and (for sale here in the near future) which are currently used by the Miracle Music teaching staff and many other elementary schools in California. One of the most sought after master music instructors in the San Francisco Bay area, in 2003 she was chosen as Project Chairwoman for the African American Jazz Caucus' K-12 Alternative Jazz Ed Concepts and Venues Project.

This year sees la Maestra involved in more diverse projects than ever before, such as the Gershwin recording project with Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra; development of products for her cybermusic store; producer of Passing the Baton:Redd-Miget: Session 1, Divine Order (readying for release this Winter 2005) and co-development of the JazGriOt Project and jazGriOt.net.
