A studio album recorded mostly during a three-day lockout at Olde West in December 1990.
Subsequent sessions added the first-take “Your Body Rich As Night/Strung Out To L.A.” and overdubs such as India Cooke’s violin to “Like A Hammer Blown”.
Mike Rose’s trumpet to “In This Town” and JoiJoi’s backing vocals.
What I remember most fondly about these recording sessions is the laborious communication between this ignoramus and highly skilled and understanding musicians. I remember tapping beats for “Let The Children Come” on a drum-riser around Sunday midnight, the last night of the lockout, the five-member band looking on, everything else halted and everyone nearly exhausted.
I remember a lot of friction and fruitful urgency from those days. I think all of us responsible for “In This Town” shoul get Tyrolean hats so that we can bounce up and down properly--straight up and down--to our version of Ska rhythmn.
It was a lot of goodtime.

LOVE IS THE MAIN FLAME

They say love is the main thing
Love is the main thing
Never know when it come up
Never know how it happen

Say love makes more happen
Makes more than itself
Never know what it bring up
Never know where it take you

Love may be demon
Love may be jinn
Arises--you pursue
Burns and it soothes
And love 's like a pool
Where thirsts may be found
And love is a current
Like lightning or river

Love leaps wild 'cross lines
Like anthrax or tonic
Makes you crazy and noble
For one and for all
Love can do anything
And it always changes names
It always changes names
It always changes names

I say love is the main flame
Deeper than brain
Love is the main flame
Deeper than brain
Fever and tonic
Burns and it soothes
Current and pool
And it
Always changes names
Love is the main flame.

WHEN I WANT TO HOLD YOU

When that ev'ning sun goes down
And there's no one else around
That's when I want to hold you
When I want to hold you

All through the day
I pause as my thoughts stray
I see your shining hair
I catch your sly, quick smile
And I want to hold you
That's when I want to hold you

You know that I get tired
Down here with the rest
Business of tests
Like we're lashed by wires
Then I think about you
That's when I think about you
See your face
Lovely like Garbo's
See your face
Pretty as Ali's
See your face
Live like peonies

In my blood you fuse
Like a rising tower
That's when I want to hold you
When I want to hold you.

YOUR BODY RICH AS NIGHT /
STRUNG OUT TO L.A.

Your body is a nurturing
I ride into night

Your body is of spirit things
To bring souls delight
Hi-dee-hi--Hi-dee-hi
Hi-dee-hi-dee-hi-dee-hi
Dee-hi--dee--Hi--dee-hi

Your body is replenishing
Source gives back to thirst
Your body is a healing thing
From it wants are burst

New cars and power lines
Are strung out to L. A.
How we use the time we have
Is our means to light

Birds are mired in the oil
Palms and firs shrink by Bays
How we meet the calls of life
Is our play with paradise

Damages is a constant
As cars run 'round the clock
Dying can't be accident
If we boil in our own pots

Politicians banning art
Scum-bags wash to shores
No shame in Nature's gifts
Naked 's where It starts

Your body is a nurturing
I ride into night
Your body is of spirit things
To bring souls delight
It goes Hi-dee-hi--Hi-dee-hi
Hi-dee-hi-dee-hi-dee-hi
Dee-hi--dee--Hi--dee-hi

Your body is replenishing
Source gives back to thirst

Your body is a healing thing
From it wants are burst
An-other world--An-other world
Another world is there for us--
Starry, fleshly night

EV'RY BODY

Cheek’a--Cheek’a--Cheek’a
Cheek’a--Choo--Chosh-Chosh

Stick people stick people--flat and trim
Stick people stick people--how we want 'em
Stick people stick people--they're not to think
Stick people stick people--learn as taught
Stick people stick people--cars are clean
Stick people stick people--safe on a Beach
Stick people stick people--naked is threat
Stick people stick people--watch your butts

Ev'ry body
Born with no fear
Ev'ry body
When they come here
Children no see
Wrong in Nature
When they come here
Born with no fear

Censors set to clamp on
Freedom of expression
They are placed on high
With their knots in ties
T' tell what we should know
But I say what I see
My eyes belong to me
Bloody reality
People dyin' on the streets
Slicks try to kill the beats
Reachin' to ev'ry seat

They try to ignore
Anyone not a whore
My eyes belong to me
They attack bodies bare
For an order based on fear
Build up more prisons
Over tears in their curtains
Shake their clubs at making love
To distract from States' neglect
Homes they're leaving wrecked
Oil-and-gold their God above
Want to keep us split
So we won't hit on it
'Cause art must expose
Official stories' holes
Their past our future
The real obscenity
And Jesus never said
What's wrong with any body
Buddha never said
What's wrong with any body
Shango never said
What's wrong with any body

Ev'ry ba-ba--ba-ba ...

Ev'ry body
Born with no fear
...

Ev'rybody got a body
Pope and Queens got their bodies
You and me got a body
Ain't no shame in any body
Ev'ry body use their body

IF I WAS SOMEBODY

If I was some--some--somebody
Maybe somebody
Could love--love--love me

My name is Oscar
I grew up in this Desert
I don't speak good English
Sometimes I drink too much
But I'm a good worker
Boss gave me keys to the Shop
In bars I get called a Wetback
I try to be a good person
But when someone don't respect me
I'll stick this knife in his neck
I want to sing with my uncle's band
I want to write the songs in my head
I want t' see my kids and the wife who left me
Maybe ev'rybody got something to express
I don't want to die--
I don't want to live--
I don't want to live like a dog on this land
I want to sing with my uncle's band

My name is Andrew
I left school in Kentucky
To make it somewhere
I drove cab in New York City
Before I fell for this Desert
Now I work out of my trailer
Mechanicin’ from Grapevine to Fresno
Sometimes I thank Lord Jesus
But no man had better wrong me
I'll kick his motherfuckin' ass
I used to sing with an R-and-B band
I still got a lot 'a songs in my head
I don't mind workin' for my kids and ex-wife
Maybe that is something I got to express

I don't want to die--
I don't want to live--
I don't want to live like a dog on this land
I 'd like to sing with an R-and-B band

I don't want to die--I don't want to live--
I don't want to die in nobody's War
I don't want to live for no goddamn Bank
I want to sing with my uncle's band
I'd like to sing in an R-and-B band

LIKE A HAMMER BLOWN

Aow, like a hammer blown
Sky won't let us alone
Can't get out 'a these Zones
Nowhere we can call home

Their Bridges span like white jewels
Skyscrapers where we once grew
Plow more ancestors' bones
To knock a white ball around

At the gas-and-guns onslaught
Warriors there for worship fought
Smashed cars to make barricades
Found power in the arms raised

To be human means to defend
The land and children
And no man can watch a rape end
No man can watch a rape end

Bridges span like white jewels
Skyscrapers where we once grew
Concrete covers our home
Sky won't let us alone
Blues 've turned to brown

Can't get out 'a the Zones
Aow, like a hammer blown

Man works for everything he owns
My trucks brought in these grounds
Now I wake up and groan
Dust on dew of the lawn
Wife can't find a new place t' go
Kids' eyes are set like TVs
Crews got to clear-cut for debts
I'm like Boss of the Mess
Some Power not of our own
Paved over my mama's home
Man asks work for whose sake
Blood for oil in powerboat's wake
Missiles on sand for gold
Corpses on the wrong road
Sky won't let us alone
Blues 'r turning to brown
Aow, like a hammer blown

DON'T YA KNOW, MISTER

Don't ya know, mister
Don't ya know, mister
Don't ya know, mister

Don't ya know, mister
Who brought you the guitar
Don't ya know, mister
Same people river-blind afar
Don't ya know, mister
We could all shine to stars

Don't ya know, mister
We'd be nothin' without the zero
Don't ya know, mister
Allah says to help the poor

Don't ya know, mister
Woman human as you are

Don't ya know, mister
All things sentient got to breathe
Don't ya know, mister
That includes earth and trees
Don't ya know, mister
Buddha don't dig people on their knees

Don't ya know, mister
What brings most to yourself
Don't ya know, mister
That's for others to develop
Don't ya know, mister
Better wake up to that wealth

IN THIS TOWN

They don't know
They don't know
They don't know

In this town
They're gonna put you down
Wear your hair
Blue or brown
Square or round
They don't know

In this town
Made for cash
Full of guilt
Wear colors
Like a sash or quilt
They don't know

In this State
Fear turns hate

At the free
Scorn envy
Re-mem-ber
Gal-i-le-o
Madame Curie
And George Sand
In their times
Beyond their place
Outside this town
And you know
And you know
And you know

LET THE CHILDREN COME

And the children came
And the children came ...

After bombs' rain
The War was done
With the Bomb's reign
The War was done
Treaties were complete
Plains greened with wheat
Steel pressed into fins
Northern empires still king

And the children came
Many different names
Born on Southern lands
Outside the steel
Outside the wheat
Drawn to cities' glow
Not enough to eat
Open sewers' pains

And the children came ...

And the Plants they burned
Profits to be turned

Products to be sold
Sprays and warheads old
Soon more of bombs
Than people could be killed
And many stood and fought
For lands they lived on

And the children came
And the children came
And so did the cars
And so did the cars
Five billion now
Five more to come
Five hundred million cars
And four times that soon

And more children come As more bombs are built
More children come As more bombs are built
More have no homes Not enough to eat
More have no homes Not enough to eat
And the Deserts spread
And the Forests shrink
And the Oceans rise Blood on sand is blown
As holes warm through ozone

Let the children come ...

We must leave the car We must leave the Banks
We can leave our fears And be rid of vampires
We must take our lands We can use our hands
We can use our minds
We can use our--our--our "im-ag-in-a-tions"

Five billion now
Five more to come
Five hundred million cars
Four times that soon

Let the children eat
Let the children breathe
Let the children grow
Let the children come.

MY OLD MAN

My old man
Wears a white crown
My old man
He gets around
Says drill this hole
Bring up that gold
Cut down that tree
You work for me
My--old--man
Calls the Earth his town
My old man--my old man

This old man
With year-round tan
This old man
Gives guns to hands
Wants back Iran
Plus Afghanistan
Sucks from Timbuctu
And me and you
This--old--mister
Mouth pursed pistol
Piranha smile Looks like his kin
Points at Sin Then sneaks it in
This--old --man
Bites all Earth like bone
Our old man--our old man

Our old man
Stands up for oil
Our old man
Sends Blacks to sand
Says save liberty Defend the Emir
A Kingdom pure Ain't Exxon grand
Our--old--man
Gives us corner gas
Our old man
Gives us gas--gives us gas
