DENISE PERRIER........,
A musical story telling experience, sultry, warm, open and very sincere vocalist, this performer, Denise Perrier has much to offer even the most jaded Jazz/Blues audience. Her wealth of musicality includes the Great American Songbook, Latin and Blues.
Denise's versatility, choice of material and dynamic stage presence make her a very appealing performer and no matter what the venue or musical configuration she connects with the audience.... thats her forte and why she has been called "The voice with a heart".
Blessed with a rich contralto voice and the ability to sing ballads and blues with equal artistry, Denise has also performed in theatrical productions including "One Mo Time" and "In the house of the Blues" portraying Bessie Smith.
Although featured in the Grammy nominated CD "Color me Blue" with Jack Mcduff, she has produced four CD's and the most recent: "The Second Time Around" featuring Houston Person and thus titled because her first CD, "I Wanna BE Loved" also featured him. Additionally she has released "East Meets West" and "Live at Yoshi's" which received high critical acclaim and responded well on the nations jazz charts.
Presently living in the San Francisco Bay Area, her career includes residing and performing in Australia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand and Japan. Her musical calendar includes visits to Russia, Siberia, Finland, Mexico, Brazil, The Ukraine, France, Italy,The Philippines and New Zealand. Additionally Denise has performed in Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Washington, Idaho, Washington D.C. and Chicago.
Denise got her first professional singing engagements with a vocal group called "The Intervals". Louis Armstrong heard them and placed them into his entourage for a performance in Las Vegas. Shortly afterwards, Denise was requested to perform in Australia, her first venture outside the U.S. and her persona continues to be highly sought after around the globe ..........!

Subject: [songbirds] Denise Perrier at the Rrazz Room in San Francisco
I recently had the pleasure of seeing one of San Francisco's treasures, Denise Perrier, in her acclaimed one woman show "Bessie, Dinah and Me" at the Rrazz Room. I have been enjoying Denise since I moved back to the Bay Area in 1982, and I was expecting the usual high standard performance that Denise always gives. But, I was truly amazed at this performance - Denise is clearly at the top of her form. Her intonation was pitch perfect, her phrasing was impeccable and she was able to sustain long notes with a beautiful, controlled vibrato at the end of the phrase. When she came out onto the stage, completely took it over as if she owned it. Totally relaxed and confident, she glowed. The show was obviously built around two of Denise's inspirations, Bessie Smith and Dinah Washington.
During the first part, Denise came out dressed like Bessie, tall, regal and all-knowing with a sly smile she gave the aura of Bessie. She started the show with "Gimme a Pigfoot" and then launched into some of Bessie's well known songs such as "I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl", "Blackwater Blues", and "Good Old Wagon". Her voice is difference than Bessie's, she has a sweeter sound than Bessie did, but the interpretations were pure Bessie.
After a change of costume, Denise came out as Dinah Washington. Dinah is one of Denise's inspirations. When Denise was starting out in the business, Dinah noticed Denise wore a turquoise dress but not with matching shoes. A few days later Dinah presented Denise with a pair of shoes that matched the gown. (As an aside, when Dinah was just starting out, Ella bought her a dress - maybe Dinah was "paying it forward".) Denise of course started with "September in the Rain" and continued with "Unforgettable" and the comical "Relax Max", followed by, to me, the highlight of the show "Don't Touch Me". Dinah was present in the room that night.
After a short interlude, Denise came back as herself and wowed the crown with some of her favorite songs including "You Better Love Me While You May", a plaintive "I Want to Be Loved", a rocking "Lover Come Back to Me" and one of my favorite songs, "I Love You More Today Than Yesterday".
It was a bravura performance by of one of our finest singers. As I said before, Denise is at the top of her game and she provided one of the most enjoyable nights I have spent in a club in a long time.

MORE COMMENTS
Remember the sultry voice that came on the late San Francisco radio station KJAZ every fifteen minutes or so saying, "Ooo, KJAZ"? That voice belongs to song stylist Denise Perrier, an actress, cabaret singer, and one of the premier Jazz vocalists in the Bay Area, and you can still hear it at the better clubs, restaurants, cabarets, and festivals around town.
Artistic integrity is the aspect of the sincerity you hear in Denise's singing. She does very little scat singing, if any. That kind of exhibitionism ("Look what I can do.") is foreign to her style. Denise wants you to feel the emotions a song can arouse. To do that at a live gig, she will open herself to her audience and invite them to participate in the ambience she's creating. She wants you to feel good about the one you're with, not marvel at her vocal prowess.
The lady is a class act.
by Nina J. Hodgson and Robert Tate
"Perrier delivers a classic jazz vocal styled date, driven by stellar performances on classic tunes, that was right at home in the clubs before it got co-opted by Vegas lounges and turned into the substance of SNL parodies. ...A winning date throughout that genre fans had better not miss out on."---Chris Spector, Midwest Records, Feb 2009
"Denise Perrier is a singer of considerable gifts and she is effective in this live performance from a San Francisco club called Pearl’s. ... Tenorman Houston Person adds some spark to Perrier’s excellent trio."
-- Fresh Tracks, George Fendle, JazzScene,, Feb. ’09
"Denise Perrier has carefully chosen nine terrific songs. ... Thanks to tenor saxophonist Houston Person (has he ever played a wrong note?) adding all the right musical elements."
-- Dan Singer, Singer’s Singers, InTune, March, 2009

Junius' 50th Anniversary Season!
Welcome to the Junius Courtney Big Band's 50th Anniversary Season, all through the year of 2012.
We're kick-starting the Anniversary Season with a BIG BAND DANCE at the Freight and Salvage, Berkeley on FRIDAY, MARCH 30th, 8 PM. Denise Perrier at the vocal helm, celebrating her ten years with the band. Great dance tunes, some new arrangements!
Save the date, and join us for a party at the Freight with a full dance floor, comfy seating, great snacks, and the sound and fun you know to expect.
The Junius Courtney Big Band with Denise Perrier, hailed as "a Bay Area institution," kicks off its 50th Anniversary Season with a big band dance at the Freight and Salvage on Friday night, March 30th, 8:00 PM (2020 Addision near Shattuck, downtown Berkeley). Internationally-acclaimed vocalist Denise Perrier will be celebrating her own tenth anniversary with the band. The 19-piece aggregation invites all levels of dancers to stake out their piece of the Freight's great dance floor to kick-off the anniversary in stomping' style. Those who prefer to swing from comfy seating are welcome, too.
In the Bay Area, where jazz and excellent musicians abound, music critic Andy Gilbert pinpoints why the Junius Courtney Big Band stands out: it’s “an orchestra that’s keeping faith in themselves, their fans and their timeless book of classic tunes and smart arrangements.” The legacy of the Junius Courtney Big Band is based on swing and an open-hearted spirit.
In addition to the big band dance at the Freight and Salvage on March 30th, the band is preparing for two other milestone appearances in 2012 at YOSHIs Oakland (June 26th and December 18th). They’re also exploring some special productions in tribute to musicians that Junius worked with, like Perez Prado and Sy Oliver.
Junius Courtney moved to Berkeley in 1945, trumpet in hand, from New Orleans, and his music hasn't stopped since. Courtney broke the color line in Bay Area counties by fronting his simultaneous combos at country clubs for society dances. He ramped up to his big band in 1962. Gala dances and concerts kept coming through the years, resulting in the heartful, dynamic outfit led by his son, drummer Nat Courtney, that celebrates fifty years of swing throughout the year of 2012.
The Junius Courtney Big Band has been playing at the Freight for a decade. Each time the band brings a varied performance by some of the Bay Area's best jazz players that almost visibly raises the roof. A packed night of sound and fun is on tap: unique arrangements redolent of Ellington, Basie, Thad Jones, the Latin Tinge plus signature originals.
Junius Courtney, who was on stage right up to two weeks before his passing, was a great trumpet player, singer and bandleader whose essential legacy has to do with his soulful, big-hearted, open-handed spirit. That’s the legacy the Junius Courtney Big Band with Denise Perrier is keeping alive. Add to Junius' mantra, “Moving right along,” and come to the party to "Let the good times roll."
www.juniuscourtneybigbabnd.com The band’s new CD, “US,” will be available in the lobby at the Freight.

It's Denise Perrier's birthday weekend but the acclaimed jazz vocalist won't be found lounging at home. Not when there's work, be it Saturday's "Wild Women of Song" in San Francisco or Sunday's showcase at the Bay Terrace Theater on behalf of the Vallejo Jazz Society.

Greetings Jazz Fans
The Vallejo Jazz Society today announced its third jazz concert this year in a continuing effort to bring top-quality jazz to Vallejo and surrounding communities. The event will feature celebrated jazz vocalist Denise Perrier in a quartet setting. Perrier is a world-renowned jazz and blues vocalist who has performed with the likes of Houston Person, Jack McDuff, George Benson and Red Holloway. The concert will take place on Sunday, November 13 at the Mira Theatre, 51 Daniels Avenue in Vallejo from 5pm to 7:30pm.

“To say that we are excited about this concert is an understatement”, said Ed Rosenback, a VJS spokesperson. “Denise Perrier” he continued, “has it alla fabulous contralto voice, amazing stage presence, spot-on pitch and most of all, she tells a story when she sings”. Ms. Perrier has performed extensively in Europe, Asia and the Americas. She has recorded four CDs under her own name and appeared in various multi-artist stage productions. For this event, she will be accompanied by a trio of top-notch Bay Area musicians: Wayne De La Cruz on Hammond B3 organ, saxophonist Bryan Girard and drummer Kent Bryson.
A not-for-profit organization formed in September of 2010, the Vallejo Jazz Society’s mission is to heighten awareness of jazz in Vallejo and nearby communities by sponsoring concerts throughout the year at various local venues. The organization will also provide jazz-related educational resources such as concerts and clinics in local schools.
Tickets for the concert are $10 ($5 for VJS members) and may be purchased online at www.vallejojazzsociety.com, at the door, or by contacting the VJS. Refreshments will be available. Donations to support the Society’s activities will be accepted and VJS memberships will be available.
For more information about this event, contact: The Vallejo Jazz Society at vallejojazzsociety@yahoo.com or call (707) 533-4593.
